Farshid Guilak, Ph.D. is Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Washington University Medical Center and is the Director of Research for the Shriners Hospitals for Children in St. Louis.  He received a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Columbia University.  Dr. Guilak’s research focuses on the study of osteoarthritis, a painful and debilitating disease of the synovial joints. His laboratory has used a multidisciplinary approach to investigate the role of biomechanical factors in the onset and progression of osteoarthritis, and as a basis for the development of new pharmacologic and stem-cell therapies for this disease.

He has published several hundred articles and book chapters and has co-edited three books, “Cell Mechanics and Cellular Engineering”, “Functional Tissue Engineering”, and “Computational Modeling in Biomechanics”.  He is the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Biomechanics, associate editor for Osteoarthritis & Cartilage, and serves on the editorial boards of several other journals.   He has won several national and international awards for his research and mentorship.
