Chinese Cork Oak (Quercus variabilis)

This rarely planted large tree from China is an even rarer escape from cultivation in North Carolina. The leaves are elongate, barely toothed with bristles, and are densely covered with stellate hairs on the undersides. The undersides are velvety-soft.

This flowering tree was photographed from far beneath.
