Kathleen McCormick

Dr. Kathleen McCormick is a senior practitioner, researcher, and policy executive in nursing, health informatics, bioinformatics, cardiopulmonary physiology, and gerontology. She has a demonstrated personal dedication to achieving major advancement in nursing informatics. After receiving her B.S.N. (Barry University), M.S.N. (Boston University), and M.S. and Ph.D. in physiology (Univ. of Wisconsin-Madison), Dr. McCormick spent 13 years as a nursing informatics scientist and clinical trial researcher within the National Institutes of Health, the National Institute on Aging and Clinical Center. Following that assignment, Dr. McCormick joined the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR, now AHRQ) and directed the clinical practice guideline program. She coauthored the Urinary Incontinence in the Adult Guideline. After leaving the guideline program, she developed the Computerized Clinical Decision Support program announcement for AHCPR. She achieved the rank of Captain (06) in the United States Public Health Service (USPHS).

After retiring from the USPHS, Dr. McCormick joined SRA International, Inc. in 1998 and developed the Genomics, Bioinformatics and Life Sciences Solutions program within the company. She has been instrumental in developing and implementing numerous programs of support for the NIH, the CDC, the FDA, the DoD, and other private organizations. She was awarded the Vision Award by SRA in May 2001. Dr. McCormick also developed the Biodefense program for the SRA Health Sector in May 2003.

In May 2003 Dr. McCormick became a Senior Scientist at SAIC. In this capacity, she works to advance the programs in Life Sciences.

Honored with fellowships in nursing, informatics, and gerontology in the United States and Australia, she is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences, Institute of Medicine for contributions to healthcare in America. She received an Honorary Doctor of Law from Barry University in 1998. She is recognized in nursing, medical and health information organizations. She received the President's Award from the American Medical Informatics Association of America (AMIA) in 1998.

Dr. McCormick is the immediate past President of the Academy of Medicine of Washington, DC. She is the chairperson elect of a working group in AMIA. She has received honorary membership in the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) in June 2003 from her colleagues internationally for her contributions in establishing international terminology standards. She is a participating member of the Genomics & Bioinformatics Working group of the IEEE-USA Medical Technolgoy Policy Committee (MTPC). She also participates on the Bioterrorism & Homeland Security Working Group of IEEE. For the past 4 years she has been the information technology representative on the Advisory Panel for the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Development Center for Research and Evaluation in Patient Safety, (DCERPS) which was funded by AHRQ. She is the co-author with Dr. Virginia Saba on the textbook, Essentials of Computers for Nurses: Informatics for the New Millenium, 3rd Edition. The book is being developed for a 4th Edition release in 2005 and will be entitled: Essentials of Nursing Informatics and will be published by McGraw-Hill, New York.
