Each section below offers historical significance, themes, trends, and information on individual works and their authors.

In cases where an author is both a poet and a prose writer, as with John Milton, I have group his or her work under one category or another as I saw appropriate. So while Milton wrote both prose and poetry, he listed under poetry since he is most remembered for Paradise Lost.
