• What do we mean by democracy? What does it mean to be a citizen? Is it to participate in our political system, or to participate actively in our communities?

• While young adults see little connection between citizenship and our current political system, they do see it in public participation.

• Classifications:

  • Gladiatorial
  • Transitional
  • Spectator

Moral Commitment and Action: Tony’s Comments

• What is it?

  • How is it different from helping family and friends?
  • In dealing with difficult community problems, are gladiatorial activities often small, but important?

• How can we bring it close to our heart (courage and compassion)?

• Does it matter? Why?

  • Helps others
  • Contributes to the development of our moral capacities
  • Great leadership experience
  • Build new friendships and professional relationships

• Are the rest of us flawed?…No

• What does this have to do with leadership?

  • This Is leadership
