48. Career Management
“The video tape is running”
Everyone has their own North Star; a high octane experience for one is misery for someone else
Jobs are not dress rehearsals; what really excites you?
“Must be persistent in learning from mistakes. Must keep going forward and be always learning.”
How managers learn and develop (task, organizational, and self)
- By “doing”, observing, and interacting
- Learn from being stretched and having a diversity of experiences
- Need to reflect on and consolidate experiences
- Can’t develop alone. Need developmental relationships.
Choosing the right positions
- How good is the fit between the organization and me?
- How good is the fir between who they are and who they want to be? What type of learning opportunities does the position offer?
Creating a success syndrome
- Show initiative and contribute to the organization’s performance
- Be alert for stretch assignments
- Build a network of relationships
Developing ethical judgement
Assessing your career
- How have I contributed to the organization’s performance? What have I added to my track record?
- If my track record and credibility have not improved, why? Do people know what I have been doing?
- What have I learned?
- How many new people have I gotten to know? Have I strengthened my relationships? Have I alienated anyone?
- Who are my mentors? How are they contributing to my development?
- Is the “fit” too good? Is it time to move on because I have mastered this one?
- Is the “fit” bad? Should I admit to myself that I have made the wrong choice? Is it best for me and the organization to move on?
