The Major Markets Index (mmi)

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) is by far the best known and most widely quoted of U.S. equity indexes-, on hundreds of business reports and in financial newspapers around the world, the DJIA indicates to investors how the U.S. market is doing. And the index that most closely mirrors the widely known DJIA is the Major Market Index (MMI), showing a 97% correlation to the DJIA since 1987.

As part of the CME equity-index trading complex, the MMI enjoys an environment that includes an unparalleled number of experienced equity index traders with the capability of providing liquidity and trading opportunities. MMI futures and options at the CME provide investors a hedge for portfolio exposure.

The Major Market Index (MMI) was developed by the American Stock Exchange (AMEX) in 1983. Commonly known either by its acronym or by XMI, the ticker symbol for the underlying cash index, the MMI is designed to measure the performance of the blue-chip sector of the U.S. stock market. The Index is based on 20 large-capitalization, well known U.S. companies, such as Coca Cola, McDonald's, General Motors and General Electric.

Unlike the S&P 500 and the S&P MidCap 400, the MMI is price- weighted, the Index is calculated by adding the prices of the 20 stocks and dividing the sum by the divisor. The divisor changes over time to reflect stock splits, mergers, stock dividends, etc. The Index is closely monitored and stocks are added and deleted as necessary to reflect changes in the marketplace. Historically there have been only two stock replacements.
