Debbie's Roses in Detail

I've documented below the different roses that I've had in my garden and provided some details of their performance. Healthy roses require a lot of care and since I'm not that vigilant my roses sometimes suffer for it. On the other hand, roses can be quite hardy and just when you think it's time to do some shovel pruning the bush can bounce back. I've provided the name, kind, color and scent level and I've rated each rose on the four star system.

Be aware that I don't mind answering questions about my experiences with different roses but I am not by any means an expert. If you are looking for expert advice on roses, check out the news group rec.gardens.roses. As with any news group, you'll have to wade through junk postings but you can find out a lot of information from people in many different climates all over the world.

America
America
Climbing
Pink with coral tones
Medium to strong scent

This climbing rose was purchased in 2001. I had no experience with this rose. I just looked on the label to confirm that it was a climber. The bush has performed beyond expectations and is my favorite. With a name like America you would assume the roses would be red but the roses are a coral pink. The blossoms are long-lasting and abundant.

Blue Girl
hybrid Tea
Lavendar
Medium scent

I've had this rose for a few years and even bought a second bush. Contrary to its name, this rose is not blue. It is lavendar. The bush does yield a decent amount of roses in a season and has a nice light scent. The blossoms last for about 3 days before they must be trimmed.

Mr. Lincoln
Mr. Lincoln
hybrid Tea
Red
Strong scent

Mr. Lincoln is a very popular and established rose. It yields fragrant red blossoms that are long-lasting and are great for cuttings. Mr. Lincoln is also a hardy rose that withstands my neglect admirably. It seems to be a slow bloomer and does not yield a lot of roses in a season. But that could be my fault.

Graham Thomas
hybrid Tea
Butter yellow
Light scent

Graham Thomas has a lot of fans. This rose yields blossoms that are cup-shaped. I believe this is an old english rose. I do like this rose. It is disease-resistant and grows quite large. The blossoms grow in clusters but do seem to "blow" quickly and thus must be trimmed after a day or two. This bush does produce a tremendous amount of roses in a season which I do really like.

Mikado
Mikado
hybrid Tea
Red with orange tones
Medium to strong scent

I've had this rose for a while and it really should be shovel-pruned. But deep down I have a grudging respect for this rose in that it has survived my neglect for so many years. The blossoms are lovely and last several days. I haven't seen this bush at its best but it is a lovely rose. This year we moved the rose to a new location since this seemed to work with some other poor performers. We'll see if this rose survives this summer.

JFK
hybrid Tea
White
Medium to strong scent

I do like the JFK rose, but it does have detractors. Most complain that the blossoms are not uniform. But this rose does have a lovely scent. It does not seem to yield a lot of flowers for me but I do like having a few white roses in my garden.

Scentimental
Scentimental
Floribunda
White and pink stripes
Very light scent

My first experience with Scentimental was not good. The bushes were fragile and did not produce a lot of blossoms. However, we purchases a bush the next year that was placed in a new bed and it did much better. This bush has produced clusters of roses that are very eye-catching. However, the name of the rose is not accurate in my garden. I can detect almost no scent with this rose. In spite of that, I do recommend it.

Tiffany
hybrid tea
Pink with some yellow on the bottom of the petals
Medium scent

Tiffany is a lovely rose. The bush has produced a nice amount of roses which are great for cuttings. I would say this is one of my best roses. The bush blooms in bunches and blooms all summer. The roses themselves are long-lasting and eye-catching. The scent is also lovely but not overpowering. The bush does fall prey to blackspot as do many of my roses. Again, this is one of my best roses.

Queen Elizabeth
Queen Elizabeth
Grandiflora
Pink
Medium to strong scent

Queen Elizabeth is a majestic rose. The bush gets very tall and the roses are large and last a few days. I've not seen this rose at its best but since the rose has been very hardy I would highly recommend it. I even purchased a second bush. And Queen Elizabeth is a popular rose that is easily available for planting.

Perfume Delight
hybrid tea
Deep pink
Strong scent

I love the Perfume Delight roses. The scent is very strong and the color is lovely and consistent. The blossoms last for about 3 days before they must be trimmed. However, my bush has always had problems with the leaves. There are spots of light yellow on them and I've always felt there was something wrong with the bush.

Proud Land
Proud Land
hybrid tea
Red
Strong scent

I received Proud Land for my birthday several years ago. I had no experience with the rose and have never seen it at my local home improvement store. But Proud Land has been a real champ. The blossoms are regular and long-lasting and the bush grows very tall and handles disease pretty well. It's a great rose.

Bob Hope
hybrid tea
Red
Strong scent

Bob Hope is one of my oldest roses. It does not seem to bloom often and seems to grow slowly although the canes could probably grow tall. The buds are almost black and the roses are large and long-lasting. But I like a bush that blooms frequently and Bob Hope produces less than 10 roses in a season. This year I replaced Bob Hope with another rose and was going to discard the bush but my husband moved it to a new location. So far it's still growing and producing only a few roses a season. But, hey, it's named after Bob Hope! How can I ditch Bob Hope?

Helen Traubel
Helen Traubel
hybrid tea
Pink with peach
Light scent

I understand that this rose was named after a famous opera singer. Well, this bush does seem to behave like a diva. It is disease prone yet continues to grow and take over neighboring roses space. The blossoms are large but the number of petals in each rose is not substantial so the blossoms are limp and blow quickly. That said, this bush is a survivor and produces many blooms all season.

**

Sheer Elegance
hybrid tea
Pink
Strong scent

This was one of my original roses that just did not make it. The blossoms have a nice scent and are full. They looked great for cuttings and blossomed regularly. But the bush was vulnerable to disease and my neglect. I can't say how hardy the rose is but it did have nice blossoms.

**
Sheer Elegance

Secret
Secret
hybrid tea
Light pink
Strong scent

Secret, also known as The Rose That Would Not Die. Honestly, this rose has nine lives. It started out strong but then almost died. It survived winter and came back with a new, thick cane. And has continued like that. Just when I think it's dead and I'm ready to get rid of it a new cane pops up. It eventually joined Bob Hope in a new location just because my husband could not get rid of it. Well, color me shocked but this rose has really come alive in the new location. It's a great, "zombie" rose.

Sweet Surrender
hybrid tea
Light pink
Stonge scent

This was also one of my original roses that just did not make it. The blossoms have a nice scent and are full like Sheer Elegance. But the bush was vulnerable to disease and my neglect. I can't say how hardy the rose is but it did have nice blossoms.

Peace
Peace
hybrid tea
Pink and yellow
Strong scent

This is a favorite rose but not with me. I could not get it to take off. It just did not like my yard. Peace would surprise me at points. Just when I thought it was dying, it would hang on. But I eventually gave up on this rose.

*

Livin' Easy
Floribunda
Orange
Light scent

I did not have this rose long. The first season Livin' Easy did well and produced good blossoms although the scent was not strong. The color was also very vibrant. But this bush just died on its own. It did not survive the winter so it may not like the cold weather.

Goldilocks
Goldilocks
Miniature
Yellow
No scent

I'm not a fan of miniature roses. The ones I've had lacked scent which is an important characteristic for me. Goldilocks was vulnerable to diseases and while it bloomed regularly, the blossoms would "blow" in one day so they did not last long on the bush. I eventually shovel-pruned this rose.

*

Singin' in the Rain
Floribunda
Peachy orange
Almost no scent

I ended up with three Singin' in the Rain bushes but I never liked the roses. There was almost no scent, I did not like the color (it seemed to be dingy), and the roses were on the small side. I was hoping the bushes would die so I could have an excuse to plant something else. But these bushes were incredible. They blossomed regularly and held on despite regular blackspot infestation. I eventually replaced them with roses I liked.

Arizona
Arizona
hybrid tea
Orange with pink tones
Stong scent

I really liked the Arizona rose. The colors were lovely. But this bush stayed on a single cane forever. It was not in good shape when planted and never seemed to take off. I gave it several season but eventually pulled for a better performer.

Sensation
hybrid tea
Red
Strong scent

Sensation was a bush that just did not take off in my garden. The color was intense and the blossoms were a good shape. But Sensation did not take off. It eventually died on its own.

Summer Sunshine
Summer Sunshine
hybrid tea
Yellow
Light scent

Summer Sunshine was a lovely yellow rose. Sometimes there were reddish streaks. But the bush did not bloom as much as I wanted and the bush was very susceptible to powdery mildew (and I don't have a problem with this disease). The bush eventually weakened and died.

Fragrant Memories
hybrid tea
Pink
Medium scent

The Fragrant Memories rose is new to my garden. The flowers have a nice scent and the blossoms are full and shaped well. It does not produce a lot of flowers but the roses last long. So far, so good.

Kordes Perfect Rose
Kordes Perfect Rose

Deep Pink and white
Strong scent

Kordes Perfect Rose is new in my garden. I liked the picture on the label and hoped the name would be a good omen. And so far, I like this rose. The color is amazing, the shape of the rose is nice, and the scent is so strong you can smell it 2 feet from the bush. This rose has been an excellent addition to my garden.

Troika
hybrid tea
Deep pink and orange
Medium scent

I've had this rose for a while and I do like Troika. The bush has survived my neglect and continues to grow and blossom (but not as much as I would like). The color is also lovely. The downside for this rose is that the flowers are not as full as I would like and the roses blow quickly. The color does not last and the rose tends to fade over time.

Fairy
Fairy
Miniature
Light Pink
No scent

I'm mentioned that I'm not a fan of miniature roses. Fairy is a rose bush that grows low to the ground with small leaves and clusters of roses. It actually would make a nice border and I've seen it planted this way. The bush is somewhat disease-resistant. I really want to replace it but the rose is very healthy and I'd rather replant it to a more appropriate location.

*

Rainbow Gold
Miniature
Orange
No scent

My last miniature rose is actually very pretty. The flowers start as a bright orange and as the rose ages the color fades to a bright coral. The bush, when healthy, is a good bloomer. However, my bush is scrawny and is not in good health. I'm hoping to bring it back but so far after two years, it's still looks like a small weed.

Double Delight
Double Delight
hybrid Tea
Red and White
Medium scent

Double Delight is a popular and eye-catching rose. The petals range from mostly white with red tips to red with white accents. This rose also is great for cutting. I've had this rose for a year now. It was a slow bloomer compared to some of the other roses like Graham Thomas and Tiffany but the color was worth the wait.

Grand Finale
hybrid Tea
White
Medium scent

Grand Finale is a lovely white rose. I had it for a few years and this bush did survive our winters and my neglect well. It did not yield a lot of flowers but the blossoms were great for cut roses. However, Grand Finale fell prey to a problem with some bushes. The bush died but the root kept growing (many roses are grafted onto different root bush roots). Consequently I had a different rose bush growing with no flowers so I pulled the bush up this year.

Rio Samba
Rio Samba

Yellow with redish accents
Light scent

Rio Samba is a lovely rose. I really like the yellow and red colors. My bush is not in great shape so I would love to see a healthy bush with these roses. Rio Samba tends to bloom in bunches. The only downside to this rose is that the color changes from a rich yellow and red to a faded coral.

Tropicana
hybrid Tea
Deep orange/coral
Medium scent

I purchased this Tropicana bush last summer and it was a slow starter. I only saw a couple of flowers and not a lot of growth. I think the bush may have needed a little while to settle into my garden. This year it's done a bit better. I think eventually this bush will be a nice addition.

Gold Glow
Gold Glow Rose
Floribunda
Butter Yellow
Light scent

This rose is a new addition to my garden. I purchased it this year because it was cheap and yellow. Gold Glow is not really meant for cutting but it does have a nice scent and the bush produced a good bunch of flowers. The roses are on the small side but so far I like the bush.
