Grant H McCray 
Born: 1900Died: 14-Sep-1987 ST. PETERSBURG - Elder Grant H. McCray, 87, founding pastor of the
Fifth Avenue Community Chapel, died Monday (Sept. 14, 1987) at South
Heritage Nursing Home.
From 1953 to 1985 he was minister of the church, first at 12th Street and Fifth Avenue S and later at 19th Street and 15th Avenue S, where it is known as the Community Chapel.
The grandson of a minister, Mr. McCray came here as a child from Lake County in 1906, before Pinellas was split from Hillsborough to become a separate county. His father was a businessman, but young Mr. McCray wanted to be a dentist, his wife said. However, the call
of the church was too strong.
In 1922, Mr. McCray was president of the local NAACP. During the 1960s, he was the expositor of the Interdenominational Ministerial
Alliance.
