"Wynton Marsalis' skills have grown as fast
as his ambition, and he is the most ambitious younger composer in
jazz."
New York Times
Wynton Marsalis has been a spokesman for
jazz and music education. He conducts workshops for young people. In
1994, he wrote a book entitled "Sweet Swing Blues on the Road," with
photography by Frank Stewart. It provides a glimpse into the life of
Marsalis, including the musicians, cities, and women encountered while
touring. It has been liked to a "fascinating self-portrait" and a must
for those who would like to travel with a musician but cannot. It
contains Wynton's views on politics, romance, being on the road, rap
music, and numerous other subjects.
A 4-part special entitled "Marsalis on Music"
aired in the fall of 1995 on PBS. Wynton wrote the material for the
video, whose purpose is to teach children about jazz in an enjoyable way.
This was made easier with Wynton at the helm, as he has the right amount
of charm and enthusiasm. This was complemented with proper visuals to
educate the children about the music. The following links provide a
recap of it.
