Challenge 2 - Global Positioning System

Part One - Gathering data from the field: (starting over the long weekend)

Part One - Processing field data with your application: (after the long weekend)

Part Two - GPS Treasure Hunt

Keep in mind that there are at least three distinctly different criteria used to judge the veracity (truthfulness) of any measurement. Consider the differences when working with your GPS units:

  1. Precision - The smallest numerical reading that our instrument gives us. With the Garmin GPS-12 this is 0.001 minutes.
  2. Repeatability - The extent of agreement between readings taken at different times or under different circumstances.
  3. Accuracy - The extent to which the measurement coincides with reality.

What a brass monument looks like:

Find the coordinates of the bronze monument. Take 3 averaged measurements and email them to me. We will then calculate how accurately these agree with the UCLA measurements using the Latitude/Longitude Distance Calculator.
