At least since Madame De Staël distinguished "two very distinct literatures: the one that comes from the south, and the one which descends from the north," southern literature has been identified as having peculiar characteristics. This course looks at the specific case of modern (i.e. post-unification) Italy in the historical context of the so-called "southern question." Class discussions will be organized thematically, by looking at some constitutive tropes of "southernism": the permanence of the past, the Mediterranean, the classical and the baroque, the failed national unification...
