Initial Leadership Definition
No common agreement regarding leadership definitions
Many think that it is not the same as management
Leadership:
- Involves a goal or result
- Involves other people
- Usually varies with the situation
Therefore, leadership is more about a process than a great person
Management vs. Leadership (Kotter)
Management: deals with complexity
Leadership: deals with change
Are processes and systems, not people
Reflected in different approaches to:
- Planning (plan vs. vision)
- Motivating (incent vs. align)
- Controlling (monitor vs. inspire)
