Initial Leadership Definition

• No common agreement regarding leadership definitions

• Many think that it is not the same as management

• Leadership:

  • Involves a goal or result
  • Involves other people
  • Usually varies with the situation

• Therefore, leadership is more about a process than a great person

Management vs. Leadership (Kotter)

• Management: deals with complexity

Leadership: deals with change

• Are processes and systems, not people

• Reflected in different approaches to:

  • Planning (plan vs. vision)
  • Motivating (incent vs. align)
  • Controlling (monitor vs. inspire)
