Difficult, but useful to get to the ‘simplicity on the other side of complexity” and define it in o sentence or paragraph
To be useful as a guidepost, must focus on core aspirations and values, yet also be specific
Not a prescription of life
Not too early to be thinking about personal philosophies, values, preferences, attributes, and goals
When faced with an emotional, complex decision in the future, you will know what you thought in 1996
Mission, MAPs, Careers, and Leadership
If we are going to study leaders and followers, why not study ourselves?
Those personal qualities and outcomes that are desirable and affect behavior
- Personal qualities: ambitious, honest, etc.
- Outcomes: friendships, money, etc.
Josephson’s Ethical Values
Three types: core ethical, cultural ethical, nonethical
Core ethical values (universal)
- Trustworthiness
- Respect
- Responsibility
- Caring
- Justice and fairness
- Civic virtue and citizenship
Values are stronger than attitudes (attitudes are general enduring positive or negative feelings)
Values have a strong effect on leadership and can override other factors (especially in the short term)
Leadership situations often involve trade-offs between important values
What values are involved in your answer to the question as to whether you would lend money to your room mate?
Leader-follower relations are much stronger when important common values are identified and reinforced
