35. Leadership: Situational and Contingency School
Leadership is all a matter of situational demands. Man has little effect on the progress of history
- The leader is the product of the situation (in the right place at the right time)
- The leader does not inject leadership, but is, in effect, empowered by the group
- Hegel, Herbert Spencer, Marx
Contingency (Yukl uses the term, situational)
Effective leadership is a function of the combination of the leader, the situation, and the followers
- Three circles
- Theories of leadership cannot be constructed in a vacuum
- Leadership is a process or a relationship between persons, not just the characteristics of isolated individuals
