The plumbing is also a little unusual, but then again in this hobby every setup is unique. The water is removed from the tank via an overflow box (this overflow box started out life as a hang-on wet/dry). The water is pumped directly out of the overflow box via a mag 7 pump. The water is then sent through the skimmer where it dumps into the refugium. The refugium is taller than the aquarium so the water flows back into the aquarium by gravity. This setup keeps all of the little critters in the refugium from getting diced by a pump as they go into the aquarium, which makes the refugium a great source of live food for the main tank inhabitants. I will be adding a chiller at some point (what do you expect with 1100 watts of light). I will be putting it in the crawl space below the house. I made provisions for such a device when I built the refugium; I have a feed and a return line bulkhead already attached to the refugium. When I build the chiller I will only have to connect the lines and remove the plugs to start the water flowing. The water top off is done via a water purifier down in the crawlspace. The input to the water purifier has a pressure regulator set to 8 psi. This gives enough pressure to supply water up to the tank without blowing the seals on the Nielsen reactor pump. A float valve is used to control the water level directly in the aquarium. |
