Marketing and the Internet

Sample Student Assignments

Below are links to some samples of work submitted by student teams for the final assignment in the Marketing & the Internet course. This final project was one of two significant assignments for the course.

In each of these example projects, student teams assumed the role of a task force charged with prototyping a Web site for a company. These prototoype Web sites are based on recommendations from student teams that were submitted as hypertext reports for an earlier assignment. As such, these Web sites are demonstrations of how the WWW could be brought to bear to address marketing opportunities for the companies represented. In none of the example sites presented here have the companies themselves been involved in any way. That is, students assumed the role of a task force in these companies, but proceeded without formally contacting the companies themselves. As such, the work represented here is not endorsed by the firms themselves. This work is entirely an academic exercise conducted without company knowledge or support.

If you have any comments regarding these sample applications, please contact me via email at johng@mail.duke.edu.

Audio Bookworld

Audio Bookworld is a seller of books recorded on audio cassettes. As students pointed out in an earlier assignment, this industry is likely to undergo significant change with the advent of on-line distribution of digitized products. As such, Audio Bookworld may be seen as a potential victim of "disintermediation". This site illustrates another catalog application that is greatly enriched by the addition of information services of interest to potential customers.

Eurosport Soccer Supplies

Eurosport is another "catalog" application illustrating the use of enriched information services to attract customers.

The Surf Report

The Surf Report illustrates an on-line information service tailored to the needs of a niche information market. This site creates a distinct personality while providing information in a well-designed and navigatable format.

The Carolina Mudcats Baseball

This site demonstates using the Web to create a home for fans of the Carolina Mudcats minor league baseball team. While it offers an opportunity to order tickets and catalog products, it also creates a site that should attract fans based on its other information services and e-mail links to the team's players.

The Edwin McCain Band

The Edwin McCain Band is an alternative music group seeking a more direct avenue of communication with its fans. This site illustrates how the Web can be used to open an alternative communication channel.

The Oakland Beach Golf Club

The Oakland Beach Golf Club project again illustrates ways in which the Web can combine information services of interest to a niche market to attract customers.

The Performance Bike Shop

The Performance Bike Shop is similar in its approach to the Eurosport and Orivs projects in that it combines direct sales with other information services of interest to the firm's target market.

Cyberbanking Services

Cyberbank is an example of a student team addressing a different question from the sample applications above. In this project, the purpose was to identify ways the Web can be used within the firm to restructure its own internal processes.
