This page describes the text and reading materials in support of BA 491. If you have any comments or suggestions, please send them via email to mccann@mail.duke.edu.

The Text

There is no required text for this course. Last year, we assigned The World Wide Web Unleashed by John December and Neil Randall. It is published by Sams Publishing. The text was regarded as a reference, or resource for BA 491. It is a comprehensive book. Several of the chapters contain information of particular relevance for the completion of assignments, others will be of general interest or less relevant. Relevant portions of the book will be highlighted during lectures. The text is not required for this year, but you might want to purchase it as a good reference.

Other Readings

As this course focuses on the World Wide Web, many of the readings will be available from WWW sites. Some of these are included as links from this Web site. Others will be brought to your attention during the course. Additional readings will be provided in paper format where appropriate during the course.

Class Materials

During the early part of the course, considerable class time will be devoted to developing Web documents using HTML. I will be using HTML Assistant to develop a number of sample Web pages. Some of these pages will be developed by me in advance of the class, and others will be developed during class. I will place those materials on the Web at the following site: http://www.duke.edu/~mccann/classes/

If you go to this link, you will find a list of the available material, usually as HTML pages. I will strive to code the mateial by date and section, with the following being a typical document title: 3-18-8a.htm, where

3-18 denotes the date ... March 18
8 denotes the 8am section (a similar document for the 1pm section would be named: 3-18-1a.htm)
a denotes the first document placed in the repository.
If the document were not unique to the class section, then it would be named: 3-18a.htm.

Class Lectures

In addition to class sessions about developing Web pages with HTML, we will devote considerable time to understanding how technologies are changing the way we live, work, and do marketing. Links to these lecture outlines are available on the course schedule page.
