First week: September 22-24
 
For Thursday 9/22  preliminaries
  • read the introduction: pay particular attention to pages xxxvi-xli
  • practice the pronunciation of the vocabulary at page 6
For Friday 9/23  study chapter 1
  • read the chapter carefully: mark whatever confuses you, and bring questions to class
  • memorize personal endings (pp. 2-3), conjugation of present indicative active (p. 4) and present active imperative (p. 5)
  • memorize vocabulary (p. 6), working from English to Latin

Second week: September 27-October 1
 
For Monday 9/27 
continue study of  chapter 1
  • review vocabulary and conjugations, so that you can read and write the sentences without looking up the words
  • write sentences 1-20 (pp. 6-7)
For Tuesday 9/28
study chapter 2
  • read the chapter carefully, making notes on questions, and points that need to be committed to memory
  • memorize first declension for noun and adjective (p. 11)
  • memorize vocabulary (pp. 13-14), working from English to Latin
  • in this and all subsequent chapters, make sure not to miss the section on etymology (in this chapter at pp. 15-16), which both is often fascinating in itself, and will help with vocabulary building in both Latin and English
For Wednesday 9/29 
continue study of  chapter 2
  • review vocabulary, declensions, and syntax, so that you can read and write the sentences without looking up the words
  • write sentences 1-20 (pp. 15-16)
For Thursday 9/30
complete study of chapter 2
  • Read the passage "Catullus bids his girlfriend farewell" (p.15)
study for QUIZ (15 minutes)
  • review chapters 1 & 2 thoroughly
  • a sample quiz will be posted on the web

  • memorize second declension neuter forms (pp. 24-5), adjective forms (25-6) & vocabulary (pp. 27-8)
  • write "Practice and Review" sentences #1-12 (p.28)

  • review vocabulary, declensions, and syntax, to be ready for in-class worksheet, which you will be asked to do from the knowledge in your head
  • write Sententiae antiquae #1-14 (henceforth to be identified as "SA") [Note for future use: be more selective about SA in this early part of the course]
