Course Description
This course is an introduction to the contributions of Luigi Pirandello to cinema, literature and theater. Throughout the semester, we will read, interpret and discuss some of Pirandello’s most famous works such as Six Characters in Search for an Author, but we will also look at lesser-known stories, and some of the movies inspired by Pirandello.

Requirements
Required Readings are to be found in the book: Luigi Pirandello, Eleven Short Stories, available at the Duke Bookstore.
Supplementary required material is available on-line, by clicking on the appropriate URL.
Students’ participation in class discussions is essential. The class will be conducted in Italian, so as to offer an opportunity to improve oral and listening proficiency. Rather than taking midterm and final examinations or papers, students enrolled in this class will be required to write weekly short summaries (one or two paragraphs at most) of the material discussed in class. The goal of this exercise is to work on writing skills.
